Word Barf® Your Effing Story:

The two centimetre by eighteen centimetre long tumour located inside my right femur bone offered me a glimmer of hope. 

 

Try laying a school-sized ruler lengthwise along the top of your thigh and imagine a mash-potato-ey substance in the longest bone in your body. I was hoping this tumour was my chance to escape my mental illness by acting as sufficient thoughtful disruption from my ongoing inner mental turmoil. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. I did not have cancer.

 

Screaming shrilly in the forest, consuming almost one bottle of red wine every night for the past twelve years (and ongoing), and exercising maniacally are just some of the tactics I employ to manage my mental disturbances and disorders. 

 

Through the telling of humorous and harrowing stories of how I have dealt with depression, anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder, and a fairly unknown type of borderline personality disorder referred to as the ‘Quiet’ type, I will share with the reader self-deprecating but informative and relatable experiences.

Additionally, using a ‘Mental Illness for Dummies’ approach, I outline important factual information regarding all of my afflictions. Citations from experts, including psychologists and psychiatrists, delineate the knowledge I have behind my troubles. Facts are powerful tools for nutcases like me who are attempting to feel better. 


To continue to manage life, to grow, and to act as a buffer to help myself get through this time of waiting for a psychiatrist’s assistance (because I am one of thousands of people who are on a waitlist for a mental health professional—professionals who, in our world today, are spread so thin), I needed to take the proverbial bull by the ‘effing’ horns and buck out the anguish inside of me through the practice of writing my own story.
